When I was in Boy Scouts we had the handbook as well as a piece of cardboard with all the common knots printed on it in white and red. I think it is still being made and is also handy to have, I think it came with some red and black string to practice with too.

A good reference to have on hand is The Ashley Book of Knots, if you can't find it in there, you probably don't need to tie it

I'm absolutly horrible at remembering knots. I have had both the practice card with the string and a practice deck of cards that had instructions for knots on each individual card. Within 5 minutes of practicing a knot I forget it!

I was the same way, I can't just sit and practice a knot. I have to actually use it for its intended purpose in the field. After years of Boy Scouts and actually using the knots, lashings and hitches for building stuff I still can remember most still, or at least the essential ones.
