I just wanted to keep everyone update with the explorer bug out project. At the moment she is running rough on start up then smoothing out once warm. I have heard all kinds of things like intake gaskets and coil packs. Maybe even o2 sensor. Then I read about a guy who had the same obd II code of random spark on his 2000 ford explorer. He did all that crap then ended up fixing it with a new alternator.

I wonder why the hell would an alternator cause the engine to miss fire? Milage is a dismal 10mpg or so now. I have to fix it and don't love the idea of a big repair bill affraid

I will look into that for you. That sounds like something I've seen before but can't remember what causes it right now.

i think i has to do with the output on the alternator not being enought for the electronic ignition
see what the manufacture specs are for the altenator output then get it tested

if you got some extra funds take it to a shop that has a smoke machince that should tell u if the intake gasket is bad
or just see how much it is to diagnose it

I have read it is the alternator in other places as well. Output is on the low side. I am considering swapping it out for a police one which should be 145 amps. I am going to see in parts america can test it on the car. If I have to take it off I am just going to replace it. I hate to remove parts and put old stuff back on. Thanks silver back

I bought it to the shop and they wanted $2500 lol...They said intake gaskets and bad timing cassettes! Rear timing cassette requires engine removal to replace. WTF ford! I don't buy it though. I have a feeling dealerships are raping people because new cars are not selling with this economy.
