Frugal survival kit... Empty
PostSubject: Frugal survival kit...   Frugal survival kit... I_icon_minitimeSun Jun 21, 2009 4:06 pm

I was thinking about the cheapest possible way for someone to put together a BOB or basic survival kit. It is always nice to have the best knife, gun, stove, etc. but what if you don't have the money to spend on the best gear? I have BOBs already made up for me and the old lady, but I'm thinking about putting together a "super cheap BOB" or at least working up a list to make one for the fiscally challenged.

Here's what I have so far...

Any suggestions?

Frost Mora Knife $12.00
Opinel #8 folder $10.00
Box of Diamond kitchen matches $1.25
Bic lighter $1.00
"Penny" homemade alcohol stove (free after drinking a couple beers and a little work!)
several oz's of 91% alcohol (for stove) $2.00
10' x 10' 6mm plastic sheeting $5.00
2qt aluminum pot $10.00
Utensils from kitchen Free
Emergency Mylar Blanket $2.50
Potable water purification tabs $5.00
2 20 oz springwater bottles.
Hand held LED flashlight $10.00
Spare batteries for flashlight $5.00
Food (price would vary depending on food choices.)
Leather palm gloves $2.50 (migrant worker special at home depot)
100' paracord $5.00
Savage model 64 .22lr rifle (probably a splurge for this type of kit, but I included it simply because its an inexpensive rifle.)

Just a simple list of stuff that, with practice and know-how, should be able to make for decent survival. what would you add and/or subtract? (all prices are approximate also.)

To save on money I would probably skip on the true "paracord" and buy some generic rope at a hardware store. Most applications for cordage will not need the 500lb tensile strength that paracord has.

I would probably add a couple of small candles to the kit as they would offer some light without running down the batteries of a flashlight.

Some tinfoil to use on the stove as a windscreen and on the canlde as a reflector. It can also be used to cook on.

A small fishing kit could be usefull if you see the need to try and catch dinner rather then carry it with you.
